Powers began her career as a reporter for The Detroit News. It was, she says, the best job ever, because it combined curiosity and writing. Her work there included an investigation that led to the imprisonment of a fraudulent baby broker. After three years in corporate public relations and non-profit management, Powers joined Hour Detroit magazine as senior editor and editor. Today, she writes freelance for various publications, including The News and The Washington Post. In 2013, she co-authored the book, Pete Karmanos A Life in Progress.
