Former New Yorker, photographer/artist Barbara Weinberg Barefield has been involved in the Detroit-area as an arts and community activist since the mid-1970s. She has faithfully photographed Detroit and the art scene for more than 40 years, while involved in a myriad of activities, including publishing an alternative weekly, serving as art director at the Detroit Free Press and the UAW, and currently while presenting Palmer Woods Music in Homes concerts and special events at Palmer Park. As a 2016 Knights Arts Challenge Winner, she is creating an accessible archive of her images and expanding and re-releasing her 1979 book Jazz Space Detroit to honor and document our city's rich jazz and cultural legacy.
